Footprint Trust Press Release - Date: 05/05/11

‘Energetic Champions’ fuelling savings on Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight residents are putting their best foot forward when it comes to saving on their energy bills.

The Island’s Footprint Trust Charity has implemented an ‘Energetic Fueline for Families Project’ and has already helped over 2,500 Isle of Wight residents to achieve a combined saving of almost £14,000 over the past 12 months.

The initiative was launched in April 2010 with the support of £99,000 funding from ScottishPower’s Energy People Trust to help families become ‘Energetic Champions’ and save money through smart fuel use.

Energy saving experts from the Island’s Footprint Trust have reached local residents in a number of different ways including community events and local workshops to offer advice. Over 20 events ranging from Riverfest in Newport to the Classic Car show have been host to ‘Energetic Champions’ offering guidance on a range of ways to achieve savings.

Over 100 households have also been visited by the Footprint Trust staff to give free tailored guidance on energy efficiency and 5,000 leaflets have also been distributed through the local community.

Ann Loughrey, ScottishPower’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and The ScottishPower Energy People Trust’s Company Secretary said:

“We are delighted we have been able to play our part by supporting this worthwhile initiative which is benefitting both residents of the Isle of Wight and the environment by reducing energy usage.

“Already the project has reached 1500 people and we are sure it will continue to deliver savings and make a positive impact for many families.”

Ray Harrington-Vail, General Manager of the Island’s Footprint Trust Charity said: “The Energetic Fueline for Families project has enabled the Trust to reach the community and give them valuable advice. Home visits and public events have been very effective ways of engaging residents about issues that affect them.

“Many individuals were unaware of the help that was available to them or in many cases were given misleading information about energy efficiency. The funding has allowed the charity to provide information to the Isle of Wight in a straightforward and personal way.

“Overall, we feel we have exceeded our original aims and reached far more people than anticipated.”

Established in November 2005, the ScottishPower Energy People Trust provides vital funding for not-for-profit organisations that help vulnerable people including families, young people, the disabled and the elderly, who need to spend more than 10% of their income on energy bills.

To date, the Trust has awarded £8.5 million to 175 projects helping over 1.5 million people in 1.2 million households throughout Britain.

The ScottishPower Energy People Trust is an independent charity funded by ScottishPower and through voluntary donations from individual supporters.
