Footprint Trust Press Release - Date: 14/09/12

Pupils have a growing interest in local food

Pupils from Northwood Primary School in East Cowes have been given the
tools to grow their own food with a donation by The Southern Co-operative.
The £100 donation is part of The Southern Co-operative’s ongoing support
for an Island-wide project by The Footprint Trust and Utility Films to
    promote environmental awareness amongst children.

As well as growing their own vegetables and fruit, Northwood Primary School
pupils joined a workshop run by The Footprint Trust charity to learn about
how food is produced and distributed, finding out about local food and the
importance of reducing food miles. Ray Harrington-Vail from the Footprint
Trust said: “We make these workshops fun and informative to appeal to
children’s curiosity about where food comes from. We also introduce them to
Isle of Wight food producers and farmers so that they can find out about
the wealth of food grown on their doorstep.” The workshops are filmed by
local media company Utility Films to be used as part of a series of half
hour films for children, shared with other UK schools via the Community
Channel available on Sky and Freeview as well as online.

Ted Merdler, Head of Brand Engagement and Communications at The Southern
Co-operative said: “The Southern Co-operative is a keen supporter of local
producers on the Isle of Wight and across the southern region with its
‘Local Flavours’ product range. We’re keen to help with projects that
engage children in caring for the environment and community around them so
this film project is a perfect opportunity”.

TSC stores in Bembridge, Cowes, Elmfield, Freshwater, Lake, Ryde, Sandown
and Shanklin stock the ‘Local Flavours’ range from Island producers
including IOW Cheese Company, The Tomato Stall, Calbourne Classics, Yates
and Goddards Breweries, The Island Bakers, Farmer Jacks, Island Mustard and
Minghella Ice Cream amongst others. The Southern Co-operative has also
established a hub at Cowes to help simplify distribution for local
    producers on the Island.

The new film, entitled ‘Miles Better’ should be available to view on Sky
and Freeview’s Community Channel and online at www.thefootprint-trust.co.uk
and www.thesouthernco-operative.co.uk at the end of this year.
