Footprint Trust Press Release - Date: 19/12/12

Island pulls together to help those in greatest need…

Island organisations have quickly pulled together to organise an event on Monday 28th January to help those suffering the effects of the recession. With rising fuel bills and food prices many Islanders are being hit. The Cash Low? Cash Flow! event at Newport’s Riverside Centre will see local charities, the IW Foodbank, Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), Age UK, the Footprint Trust Eat & Heat team, The Storeroom project, Community Action Health trainers, along with Job Centre plus, NHS public health and the Isle of Wight Council Trading Standards - all on hand to give guidance to the public on help available. They are particularly keen to warn people of the dangers of loan sharks. The Isle of Wight Credit Union will be on hand to offer an alternative to expensive “pay-day” loans.

The Cash Low? Cash Flow! Is an informal free event, which will run from 11am to 3pm and will have experts on hand to chat with those attending.

Local ‘Heat Hero’ Ray Harrington-Vail of The Footprint Trust Energetic Project said,

‘ There is a lot of help available …now is the time to get some free guidance on how to sort out cash flow problems before things get too bad…”

“…for example…people on low income can get a Warm Home Discount on their energy bills – we can usually save most households around £200 a year with other measures though our free Monergy training sessions...”

CAB and Jobcentre plus staff will be at the event giving advice on allowances and benefits available. On the Island every year millions of pounds are left unclaimed by those in the greatest need.

The first 50 people attending will be given a fee TV powerdown worth £10. Details of free home energy visits and information on low-interest loans will also be made available.

The Isle of Wight Council’s Adult & Community Learning, The ScottishPower Energy People trust and the Illegal Money Lending Team, England have all supported this event. More information from The Footprint Trust on 01983 82-22-82 or email info@footprint-trust.co.uk
