Footprint Trust Press Release - Date: 31/01/14

Southern Water supports fuel poor on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight’s Footprint Trust charity has been able to help some of those on the lowest income, thanks to support from Southern Water.

The Trust’s WarmerWight-plus project helps people in fuel poverty. This is defined as households who spend 10% of their income on energy for their home. This year’s campaign was launched at the Riverside Centre in Newport in December, and some 300 local people attended. This winter, staff from the Trust have helped hundreds of Islanders reduce their energy and water bills, by providing insulation and new boilers, along with guidance.

However, sometimes the simplest of things can make a big difference. The Trust gives away Save@Flush bags and 4-minute showertimers – supplied free by Southern Water.

“Shower timers can make big energy and water savings. If a family of four reduces their showing from a total of an hour a day to a total of 16 minutes – a four minute shower each – then we are talking hundreds of £££’s in energy and water saving. This frees up money to heat the home...”

Explains Ray Harrington-Vail the senior energy worker at the Footprint Trust.
“We have been able to direct low-income customers to the Southern Water Charitable Trust, for assistance such as obtaining a new water-efficient washing machine.”

The Footprint Trust was given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2013 for its ground-breaking work in helping the Isle of Wight Community. Ray was given the title National Heat Hero last year for his work in assisting those in fuel poverty, which is defined as households who spend 10% of their income on energy for their home.

The Trust has just launched an Anti-Freeze Fund for the Island, so it can expand its work, in both helping people and improving the environment -www.footprint-trust.co.uk/donate
