Footprint Trust Press Release - Date: 14/07/14

    Ventnor warms up to help

The Warmer Ventnor scheme was officially launched in July 2012 and has assisted over 100 people. The scheme is funded by Ventnor Town Council and delivered by the Island’s Footprint Trust charity.

The Footprint Trust visits people in their homes in the Ventnor area and gives them tailored guidance on staying warm, grants available and details of free or economic insulation initiatives. They have been able to use the Warmer Ventnor Fund to supply energy efficient white goods, which has helped reduce fuel bills and improved lives. To date over 20 A* energy efficient appliances have been purchased including washing machines, cookers and fridge-freezers and a dish-washer for a disabled pensioner. Other practical help has been provided by giving away thick curtains or thermal blinds. Those assisted come from all walks of life.

The Footprint Trust is recognised both locally and nationally for their pioneering work in fighting fuel poverty and helping the environment. Ray Harrington-Vail was awarded the title National Heat Hero for his work in helping people on the Island. The Trust also received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – the MBE for the charitable sector. The charity works with Ventnor Children’s Centre to promote the scheme and has run a number of its popular MONERGY workshops in the Town, to help people understand their bills and ways to keep their costs down.

Speaking for The Footprint Trust Ray Harrington-Vail said,

“People in Ventnor have benefitted greatly from this scheme, which aims to help those local residents in greatest need. Amongst those assisted with free guidance on keeping warm and well, along with A* rated appliances include those who have fled domestic violence, bereaved parents, young working families on low income, and elderly and disabled people. ”

Ventnor Town Council said: ‘The Town Council is committed to making a meaningful impact in Ventnor. We wish to support and help our residents, especially those, who through no fault of their own, have fallen on hard times.”

The Footprint Trust has approached a number of other Town and Parish Councils to run similar schemes in their villages and towns, but to date none have wished to fund a scheme to help their local residents.

“We would be delighted to hear from local councillors and clerks so we can set up a tailored a scheme for their town or parish.”
