Footprint Trust Press Release - Date: 11/12/14

    trending to help Island youth...

The UK's first dedicated Upcycling Youth Cafe is set to open at 30 High Street Newport, Isle of Wight, on Monday 15th December.

It will be open every weekday from 3pm to 6pm. It is situated opposite the Guildhall and 02 shop, in the former Osbornes' gentlemen's outfitters shop. The project is the latest practical scheme to comes from the popular island-based charity The Footprint Trust. The Trust recently was given the Queen's Award for Voluntary service due to its service to the Isle of Wight community.

The trend project will provide a drop-in centre in central Newport, offering young people an opportunity to meet in a safe environment, learn skills in design through the medium of up-cycling waste products, into useful items. Young people will learn more about enterprise linked to helping the planet and how this relates to their own lives.

An annual fashion and art show will highlight the work carried out at the Trend centre. The centre will also give young people a safe, friendly place to go after school. It will be staffed by people with a broad range of skills.

The trend shop will contain an Upcycling workshop and youth cafe, with free internet access along with guidance on many issues affecting young people. It will be officially opened on the 11th December at 3.45pm by the Island's Youth MP Will Matthews, who said

"I think projects like this show a real sense of community. It is great that young people finally have somewhere safe and friendly to go in Newport and I look forward to using it myself!"

The public and businesses will be able to support the project by donating materials, volunteering and buying Upcycled items from the trend shop.

Businesses have already come forward offering help and support, and The Trust would like to hear from any company or individual who may be able to help by, for example, donating shop fittings or staff time.

The local registered charity, The Footprint Trust is one of many local organisations that have stepped up to provide positive activities for young people on the Isle of Wight.

The Trust has been awarded £120,000 by the Isle of Wight Council's Youth Offer, over a three-year period, to run their Trend Project, which will be based in Newport and through outreach in Cowes. The Trust was set up in 2002 to reduce the ‘ecological footprint’ of the Isle of Wight, and achieves this by running practical projects, that help people and the local environment.

The Trust, which is a registered educational charity, has been working with young people since it launched its first project in 2003. To date some 34,000 young people have been involved in Trust projects, ranging for workshops to nature conservation projects. Teenage parents have also been assisted through the Trust’s energy efficiency work. Their Riverfest event allows young people to showcase their talents.

Speaking for the charity Ray Harrington-Vail said,

“We are delighted that we have been awarded this grant from the Youth Offer. It gives us a real opportunity to build on our established work with young people and open up links into employability by designing and delivering this youth-led green enterprise project.

It builds on the real commitment to recycling across the Island, and this project will enable young people to add their voice to this by serving on our advisory board and in the running the Trend centre. The Island belongs to next generation and this project will give them an understanding of the issues that must be addressed.”
