Footprint Trust Press Release - Date: 27/06/16

    Newport Emergency Warden Scheme Underway

Following a number of community meetings, the first batch of lead wardens for Newport Parish Council’s emergency warden scheme have been trained and equipped to help vulnerable people during flooding and other emergency incidents.

Ray Harrington-Vail of the Footprint Trust carried out the training which was part of grant funding secured by Newport Parish Council from the SSE Resilient Communities Fund.

The wardens will provide a valuable link between the community and the emergency services and be able to cover a number of situations including flooding. They will be able to assist their neighbours and support both the community and emergency services as they will operate on a local street level.

Cllr John Hobart from Newport Parish Council said

‘We are pleased to have trained out first Emergency Wardens. The training they have received will help ensure that vulnerable people in flood areas will be identified. The training also included action that householders can take to help prevent flooding, such as not putting rubbish or garden furniture near the river banks. We are sure that other community-minded individuals will come forward now that we have got the ball rolling ‘

Cllr Martin, who also attended the training, recommended the scheme. He said

‘The training was interesting and informative and the wardens are encouraged to work to their strengths, so age and ability is not an issue. I would like to encourage residents to volunteer in their area.’

The next training session will take place in early October and spaces are still available.

If you would like to volunteer or require more information, please contact the Parish Clerk at the Riverside Centre on 559119 or email clerk@newportwight.org.ok.
