Footprint Trust Press Release - Date: 13/02/08

    Communities get renewable action

As part of the drive to make the Island more sustainable renewable energy systems have been fitted three public buildings thanks to funding from the IW Council, IW AONB Partnership and EU Leader+. This good news comes in the wake of escalating fuel prices and the Councilís positive commitment to make the Isle of Wight the Eco Island.

The Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners offices have recently benefited from the installation of a solar water heating system. Local business Solent Solar has undertaken the design and installation of one of the Islands largest solar thermal arrays. The very efficient solar tubes heat up water storage cylinders, which provide heated hot water for the facilities at the offices. The solar system is designed around well-proven technology, which has been operating for over 25 years.

A Ground Source Heat Pump has been installed at Shorwell Village Hall by Greener Energy Systems, also based on the Isle of Wight. This technology will help heat the hall and thus reduce their dependence on mains power. The system extracts heat from the ground, passes this through a heat pump which exaggerates and transfers the energy into the hall, heating it via a series of new high efficiency radiators.

At the Brading Centre solar electric panels have been installed by Cowes-based Engenius Limited. Their output will dramatically reduce the need for mains electricity, and as energy prices continue to rise the value of the installation will rocket over its predicted 25-year lifetime.

The public is being invited to three events so they can find out more, from 11am to 4pm.

Saturday 1 March - Yarmouth Harbour Offices

Saturday 8 March - Shorwell Village Hall

    Saturday 15 March -Brading Centre
